Forex shortage cripples Syrian pharmaceutical industry
A shortage of foreign currency has brought Syria’s pharmaceutical industry production to a near halt, AFP has reported. A local daily said that the Syrian central bank, which previously provided local industries with foreign currency at preferential rates to help finance the import of raw materials, has put an end to this practice. “The central bank has recently stopped providing foreign currency at the official rate,” Syrian pharmaceuticals’ Scientific Council said in a letter to prime minister Wael al-Halqi. “We have run out of raw materials, and in order to keep producing, we need to restock at the [official] exchange rate,” the letter added. The head of the Syrian Chamber of Industry, Fares Shehabi, warned that “the majority of pharmaceutical companies would have to cut their production of antibiotics by nearly 70%” if the situation does not change. “Companies that have made no profit for two years will have to just stop working entirely. Most [pharmaceutical] companies in Aleppo and Damascus have already stopped producing most medicines,” he said.Saudi Arabia bans Ritrodine
The registration of Ritrodine (Yutopar), which is used to stop premature labour, has been cancelled by the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA), Arab News has reported. Saudi-based Modern Healthcare Solutions Co, a subsidiary of Modern Industrial Investment Group Holding (MIIGH), has said it has signed a cooperative partnership deal with Pharmaniagia, a majority-owned Malaysian government pharmaceuticals and medical resources, Arab News has reported. The Saudi health ministry has said it has hired 2,323 doctors from seven countries to ensure health care services across the kingdom, Arab News has reported. The medical specialists, consultants and surgeons in rare specialties were recruited over the past three years from Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan, the US, Britain, Sweden and Australia, said ministry spokesman, Khalid Al-Mirghalani. Australia’s biggest provider of fertility services Virtus Health has announced plans to expand into the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions, as well as seeking acquisitions after its initial public offering raised A$338m ($329m), Bloomberg has reported. “The other area of growth for us will be an international expansion,” said Virtus CEO, Sue Channon. “The Asia-Pacific, China, India and Middle East markets are very immature and highly fragmented,” said Channon. The company’s 33 fertility clinics in Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales provided 35% of the IVF treatment cycles performed last year in Australia.
